I urge you to oppose H. Res. 154, legislation that is harmful to the United States’ national security interests and is based on a foundation of distorted history and falsehoods.

This legislation presupposes a narrative about events during the First World War that is isolated from broader historical context and is woefully incomplete. It ignores the millions of victims from all races and cultural heritages, especially the Turks, Kurds, Arabs, and Armenians who comprised the tremendous human cost of this tragic period in history.

Congress’ role should not be to reinterpret history by taking a stand on this complicated issue. That is a job best left to historians, a group which has never come to a viable consensus on this issue. Congress should work to bring both sides together and chart a path forward that focuses on reconciliation instead of perpetual enmity.

In the interest of the United States and to ensure that Congress plays a constructive role in bringing these two nations together, I encourage you to oppose this harmful legislation.
